Student Advisory Committee on the Neighborhood
The University of Chicago makes a unique contribution to the vitality of our South Side neighborhood and to the Chicago metropolitan region--through the institution's broad economic impact, as well as its efforts to enhance the community areas around campus. The University works in partnership with the City of Chicago, community organizations, and residents to improve public safety, neighborhood schools, parks, retail, housing, job access, and transportation.

The purpose of the Student Advisory Committee on the Neighborhood is to build student knowledge of the efforts of the OCA and serve as a liaison for questions and concerns regarding its work; to contribute information and insight to the implementation process of current community affairs strategies and issue areas; and to provide recommendations for future OCA efforts. Approximately 20 students serve on this committee. The Committee is co-chaired by the Chair of the Student Government Community Affairs Committee and Sonya Malunda, Assistant Vice President and Director for Community Affairs. Michelle Olson, Assistant Director of Government and Community Affairs, staffs the committee.

The Student Government representative for Community Service will chair this committee and will help elect other students through Student Government, Deans of Students, and various other University administrators that work with students. Selection of the committee members is made by the President of Student Government in consultation with Bill Michel from the Office of the Vice President and Dean of Students in the University and Michelle Olson from the Office of Community Affairs. The committee meets quarterly and includes a broad mix of graduate and undergraduate students that represents a diversity of student opinion.
